After a good marketplace review, my search ended with this Milwaukee M18 Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) sawzall. Great features plus M18 Li-Ion power means freedom from electrical outlets and extension cords.

PROS: anywhere use, feel (balance), good ergonomics, powerful Li-Ion technology, quality (Milwaukee), strong/snug case, attractive product
CONS: None

At 7.9 lbs, with battery installed, it is a little heavier than Milwaukee's lightest corded units (7 lbs, plus cord). However, I like being able to grab the unit and execute the work without having to string out and deal with extension cords. Two of these M18 Li-Ion batteries will keep you busy.

The M18 Li-Ion battery provides full power until it runs out (battery has a gauge), it develops no memory problems like earlier NiCads, can be topped-off (charged) at anytime, and will not deteriorate as fast as the NiCad when stored or left unattended for long periods.

At todays prices, the cost is close (comparison to corded units). I applied the money I was going to spend on 75- to 100-feet of heavy gauge electrical cable (10- to 12-gauge) toward the cost of the 2620-22. That is $100+ for American-made high grade cable (copper is expensive); a real consideration for persons looking and trying to decide. Also, Milwaukee's "incentive" program (April 1 thru June 30, 2009) for M18 Lithium-Ion tools provides WOW to an already good purchase ... check it out!

The M18 Li-Ion sawzall is amenable to "wherever" you want to use it: camping, hunting (deer blind), trail clearing (RVs), or simply demolition or clearing out debris in the middle of nowhere. "The charger will operate with most generators and inverters rated at 300 Watts or higher." Inverters of 700 Watt DC cost about $60 and connect directly to one's car battery.

BONUS: The M18 Li-Ion sawzall can add security to one's wellbeing when the electric power goes out. If you live in areas where tornados, hurricanes, ice storms, etc., can occur, M18 Li-Ion cordless tools such as this one can help one get out of bad situations.

This saw is awesome! It seems to have more power than a regular 18V, but the best thing is the lithium ion battery with the "fuel gauge" right on the battery that lets you know how much charge is left in the battery. This M18 battery will go and go and go full blast until it loses all charge and then it stops. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a spare battery if you'll be using it for a big job and don't want to have to wait the 30-50 minutes it might take to recharge the battery. I used it to cut a bunch of branches for about 2 hours and I still had juice left in the battery. This saw had more than enough power for what I use it for (small trees, branches, 2x4s with and without nails, wood fence demo, etc.), and the Milwaukee name gives me a feeling of quality. I think most of the worm drive saws are dependable. Skill saw has paved the way for most of us. This saw has the name brand and all - bosch. Overall I like the saw. The only thing I had to adjust to was is the visiablity. The base plate is by far strong than other base plates but I notice the difference at the blade. Its a smaller opening compared to the skil saw. I recommend going to a store to compare worm drives in "feel" first before buying. I like this saw but some would prefer other features over others. On a positive its a strong saw. This one will last forever. No complaints there. Being a lefty I am inclined for visibility though. I got this saw for a couple of bath remodels. Overall, the saw seems good, though I haven't used it extensively yet. But I do have a few problems with this saw.

1) The included blade was not only of poor quality, it was dangerous. The blade warbled so bad that the saw jerked and shook when cutting and it caused a few tiles to bind and crack. I was ready to return the saw when I tried a new blade and the problem was gone.

2) After less than an hour of use, the handle on the rip fence came off. The pin on which the locking handle pivots broke and fell out. I had to fabricate a new pin.

3) The rip fence is not self-aligning, meaning when you lock it, it isn't automatically adjusted to be parallel to the blade. It can be off by as much as a 1/4 inch front to back. This is annoying because you have to adjust the fence position both at the front and back of the table, then hold it securely in place as you lock the blade.

One other minor complaint is the location of the on/off switch.
It is right under the front table rail where it is not readily visible, but instead you have to feel for it. This is even more of a problem when the rip fence is positioned near the on/off switch as it partially blocks access to the switch.

The saw does have some nice features though, like a laser cut guide, a tilting table for bevel cuts, and a fence-sliding miter gauge.

In spite of the quality issues I experienced with this product, I still believe that this saw is better designed and has better features than cheaper models But it definitely lacks the quality to be anything more than a do-it-yourselfer tool. My first word when I ripped my first board with this Trim saw was "Wow!" The ease of use, it's ability to slice through a piece of lumber, or a long cut through plywood, without any effort was amazing. I got this saw as a gift 7 years ago and I just look for excuses to use it. I'm no pro so I can't attest to it's toughness.(Nothing has broke on mine) But I would think any tool that is expected to function with great accuracy and stay true should be treated with respect and not abused.
I've mostly done crown molding and trim work with it but I also use it anytime I can fit something under it. Like mitering the tops of deck posts, squaring up plywood pieces for projects and installing hardwood flooring. I simply love the precision you can get. It's easy to shave paper thin slices with this thing. The blade that came with mine was the Bosch 40 tooth carbide and it cut great and is still cutting. The clamp is invaluable as is the instruction booklet(especially if your tool gets knocked out of alignment. The booklet gives all the instructions for resetting the adjustments). Mine came out of the box set perfectly and is still true. If I had to complain about something the dust bag is pretty worthless.
After reading the instruction and familiarizing yourself with this tool, operation is very easy and straight forward just don't get too comfortable and cut off your hand! (no joke)

I am a trim carpenter and this is by far the most accurate and production ready saw out there. You can lug those ten and twelve inch monsters around if you think you need em'. My father-in-law has this saw and I have had the chance to put it through its paces (I own a Bosch 5412L -- a wonderful saw for finish carpentry). Unfortunately, this saw disappoints on many levels...

(1) the fence is so low that it does not support the work adequately, especially when cutting baseboards upright or crown molding in position
(2) when making a right-tilt bevel cut on the left side of a piece (a very common task), it is nearly impossible to hold the work safely and securely without your hand getting in the way of the motor housing
(3) the upright handle position can be awkward when making left-end cuts (especially for a righty like me)
(4) the twisting miter lock on the front takes about eight turns to lock securely
(5) weighs a ton, with no side handles to help carry it
(6) having the miter scale on the right makes no sense, as it gets blocked by the piece you're cutting
(7) supplied clamp has too many adjustable parts to set up quickly
(8) no venier micro-adjustment for "tweaking" angles to a 1/4-degree accuracy

Now the good points...
(1) smooth, clean cuts
(2) soft-starting
(3) relatively quiet

For the price, I think you can find a better saw with less compromises, such as the Bosch 5412L. For less money, the DeWalts offer great accuracy without all the bells and whistles. I have had this saw for over a year now as a dedicated mortar bed saw. I use it to cut out old mortar bed tile installations. This involves changing the blade to a diamond and making full depth (of the bed) cuts into tile and concrete cutting the tile field into lift able sized pieces. so when I take this saw out (7-8 times last year) it gets run very hard (several hundred foot of concrete cutting in an hour or two).

I picked up my Bosch 1677M a few years back with some birthday money, so now a few years later I've had a chance to use it a lot. This is my 2nd saw. I got into woodworking 2 years ago and was using a Craftsman mid-level contractor table-saw that was good, and I learned a lot on it. I shopped around for quite awhile and had my eye on this saw for quite awhile. I couldn't quite justify the "normal" price compared to other saws, but when it popped up at $672 on Amazon one day, I ordered it.

Shipment was fast -- arrived in about a week. Well packed, no damage or missing components. Assembly took 2 or 3 hours working by myself. The table was flat from left to right and from the back to the miter slot, the front was about .020" high. It won't matter at all when ripping or resawing and will be negligible otherwise. There were two small problems:

(1) When the blade guide is fully retracted (maximum height cut), the steel "cover" rubs on the upper wheel. There's a chamfer on the cover but it's not big enough -- it took about 20 minutes with a file to remedy.

(2) The table insert that goes around the blade wouldn't fit -- it was close, but had a lot of burrs around the edge. Another 20 minutes with a file and it fit.

Neither of these are huge items, but deburring parts and making sure parts fit are things that Delta should do at the factory.

Once enough rework was done to make parts fit together, I started the saw and it works great. I used the included 1/4" blade to do some curved cuts and a 3/4" blade to do some ripping and resawing. It runs smoothly and quietly with no vibration, the blade guides work well, and it has plenty of power -- I resawed a scrap of 4 1/2" thick white oak and it didn't sound any different than cutting 1/4" plywood. The dust collection is OK -- could be better. Changing blades is easy and adjusting the tension is easy, and adjusting the guides is fairly easy (an on-board allen wrench would be a nice touch).

I feel like I got a great deal on this saw at $672 and expect it to be a "mainstay" of my shop for many years. More frequently, it is shown at $899 or more. At this price I would take a very serious look at the Grizzly G0457. I have needed a bandsaw for one purpose, resawing. Unfortunately, my shop only has a single 20 amp circuit at 110V, which means I am extremely limited in my choices for tools and can only run one at a time. I am also forced to consider the budget, so the Grizzly saw seemed to offer the most bang for my buck.

My set up is the GO555X with a 6" riser block and an HTC mobile base. Considering the low power and large capacity, I decided to make an investment in a 105" Lenox Tri-Master carbide tipped blade.

Having ordered the saw from Amazon, I had to call Grizzly customer support to tell them to add the $30 lift gate service. Otherwise, I would have had to lift this saw off of the truck. If you have a couple of friends that can leave work with you, that is not a big deal. It came in two boxes that were easy to move around with a hand truck.

Assembly took me much longer than I had expected, because of the riser block. I put the whole thing together myself, but in retrospect, that was stupid. Get someone to help you, so you don't hurt yourself or damage your equipment. I was lucky. I had to shim the top wheel out after installing the block, which means I also had to shim the arbor shoulder. I got some arbor shims and shoulder shims at the McMaster web site and I am sure you can find them elsewhere. Once the wheels were coplanar, my only problem was noise. The lower bearing guides had some rust in them and had seized. I was able to replace them with bearings from an old pair of inline skates (they are the same size). Now it runs smooth and quiet.

I have resawn two roughly 4 foot long, 11 inch diameter logs now. One was Cedar that had been drying out in a field for years and the other was a fairly fresh piece of Bradford Pear that was saturated with water. The saw got through them both admirably. I was very impressed.

Resawing creates more saw dust than I had ever imagined and the dust collection didn't seem to do very much, but it does. It keeps the lower cabinet somewhat clear, which is important, because the pulleys, belt and lower wheel are housed in it. If the sawdust is allowed to build up, your saw may not turn on, or the belt may start slipping. Still, a lot of dust never gets into that cabinet and is thrown around the shop.

I have been skeptical of Grizzly for a long time. I am much less apprehensive now. The adjustments/fixes that I had to make on this saw are common to all bandsaw makes on the market. For what it does and the price it is a good value. Important to keep it maintained with periodic lubrication or it will seize and the blades is likely to break. Good idea to get at least one extra blade as they break without warning and long before the teeth are worn down. The cut-off switch works well so you can start it cutting and walk away to do something else.

For almost any length of stock you will need a separate support for it. Unfortunately the height of the cutting bed is lower than any roller stand I have found so I ended up putting the bandsaw on a couple pieces of OSB to raise it a couple of inches.

The stand is barely able to support the weight of the cast iron saw and is the real weak point of the bandsaw. A stronger and taller stand would be nice and it will be one my next projects. The stand that comes with the bandsaw is barely strong enough to support the wheels as the bandsaw is wheeled into position. I am not into wood working to create an income. I've retired after 36 years of helping thousands of youngsters find some direction in their life. I also do not consider myself more than average in creativity . .,but, thanks to my Dad (who operated a cabinet shop while I was growing up) I still have a yearning to produce functional, quality wood products. He was a "tough" teacher, but, now in my later years; I realize how much of a GENIUS he really was. The one thing he always held as paramount was this: To do the very best, you must have the right tools.
I was able to partially restore his old (at least 45 years old by now) Delta band saw, but there is only so much you can do with something of that age .. . .(hope my wife don't read this). Couldn't even find a decent belt . . had to find the closest in size and shim and shake, etc., to make it fit. Plus, getting it to cut anything over 3 inches thick (even with a new blade) was a chore.
So, I began my research, and for the past few weeks I have read just about everything about bandsaws and the many, many options on the market.
So, I created a priority list:
1. I wanted a quality product that current users held in high regard.
2. I wanted a band saw that was easy to operate.
3. I wanted a saw that could do both "heavy duty" chores, and be able to
drop back to the more delicate cuts without having to go through
too many alterations.
4. I wanted a mid-range price saw that seemed to reflect 1-3 above.

I finally decided on the Jet DXPR because I wanted the capability of cutting 10-12 inch thckness. I know there were several reviews that spoke of an adapter you could put on a regular 14 inch saw to increase from 6 inches to 12 inches, but when I compared the prices, buying the DXPR (it was a little more I think) just made sense.

Well, it arrived today . . about noon. Had to get my wife to help me
lift it onto the base. And, even though I have operated a band saw before, I have never "set one up from scratch". But, within 90 minutes
(in a 94 degree -- non-airconditioned shop) I pushed the first piece of wood through the blade. Yep, started with a piece of quarter inch panel wood . . moved to a 2x4 next, and by 4:00 pm, I dragged a 10 inch oak log off the wood pile and was delighted with how easy it sawed in half.
And that was with the standard quarter inch blade that came with the saw. I don't even have decent blades yet, and have already cut out a small box from a piece of 4x4 that just happend to be within easy reach.

I know, many would like to see a review of someone who has used this saw for 6 months and has put it through all the possible paces. However, even though I am not a super experienced wood artist (yet!), I do feel comfortable that I have purchased a very practical, useful and quality saw that will be able to handle all my current and future requirements.

I was also satisfied with the Amazon.com price, and free shipping. The saw was delivered within 7 days of my order. Plus, the delivery guy (ABF freight, I think) was extremely helpful by helping me get the item off the truck, and onto my trailer. Although he could not get down my drive way with his 18 wheeler, he got as close as he could. I had several emails from both Amazon and the freight company about delivery, plus two phone calls from ABF to assure me of the delivery schedule, etc. The whole process was painless.

Maybe I'll come back in a few months with an update.

I didn't buy this saw from Amazon, but I see they sell items from the company I used. It's made in China, but it seems to be well constructed. I chose it because of the method it uses to change the blades. I think the screwdriver system used to loosen or tighten the blade has to be more sturdy and reliable over a period time than the ones that use plastic parts to tighten the blade into position even though they require no tool. I don't find using the screwdriver unhandy at all. And it's so quick and easy.

Having never owned a quality jig saw before, I am very pleased with how smoothly and easily the saw cuts in all kinds of wood. There is no comparison to my cheap Black and Decker and Master Mechanic. It has always been a job to get either saw to cut any type of board 3/4 thick or thicker. The almost new Master Mechanic burned up trying to cut some designs in a fir 2x6, and I wasn't pushing the saw either. Even with a top quality blade it was a very slow process. I have cut 2x4's, 3/4" hard maple, and 1 1/2" white oak with no problems at all with the Bosch. So far every cut has been quite smooth and square.

I compared 15 amp reciprocating saws by Bosch, Milwaukee, Hilti, and Makita. The Milwaukee had a thin flimsy plastic lever adjusting the in-out movement of the shoe. I thought this was such weak design that I just was not going to buy the Milwaukee, no matter what else was right or wrong with the tool. The Hilti was 13 amp, but a very well made tool with one big problem. The Hilti has no speed limiting dial, all speed control is done with the 4 finger trigger. I did not buy Hilti, since I thought a speed control dial a "must have" feature. The Makita got passed up by reputation, there are too many stories out there about quality control issues with the blade change and shoe breaking under hard use. The Bosch RS35 is big and heavy, feels like more than the published weight. But under use the weight seems to steady things, and the anti-vibration system works well. There is so much power that I do not use high speed when cutting very often. The tool can get rather hot under hard use. A detail Bosch did not get right is the "robust demolition foot" with "cam lock" lever system, it is no more "robust" than the shoe on any other saw, and the "cam lock" is slow and secures tight only when the shoe is all the way in. Another detail wrong is a too thin plastic boot on the cord as it exits the saw handle. GREAT Saw, can be used in lieu of a circular saw and can cut through anything ! But the blades take practice changing !

The secret is the blades and Bosch now makes the blades available for different manufacturer jig and saber saws.

Let me say there has never been any piece of wood or board this thing hasn't been able to rip through, I've even cut down mid size tree and the stump with the rough wood blade.

The variable speed trigger is smooth so you can use this saw for fine craft work too.

Just like every other reviewer, I have to reiterate the blades are tedious to change, it is a tool less system that has to be finessed. TIP: When it arrives and you've made a few cuts, practice removing and replacing the blades until you have the routine down. This is important because the blade will warble if it isn't tight, this happened to us but no one was injured.

I can't justify spending very much money on a circular saw. I'm a part-time remodeler, not a professional carpenter, so take that caveat for what its worth. I can't justify the money for a worm-drive saw, especially since they're so much heavier. The circular saw isn't a tool I use very often for really heavy-duty applications anyway. The miter saw and sawzall both get considerably more use. For most applications with dry wood and non-beveled cuts, this saw has more than enough power. If you need to do a lot of jobsite bevel cuts at 2 inches deep, this saw might not have enough power. I prefer a table saw for those applications. With a sharp blade, this saw easily cuts through any nominally sized 2 inch lumber and plywood. And for most homeowners and DYIers, isn't that enough? I've used this saw for many remodeling applications, and it has held up just fine.

I must say I am very pleased with this machine. With my 8 1/4 inch Ryobi (RA202) being rendered useless with an unrepairable recall I was in the market for a new RAS. With the market being so limited, I began looking at what was available with Delta, Craftsman and Original Saw (which was out of my price range). I considered the 10 inch Delta, but after researching and reading many reviews I chose the 33-890. I have not been disappointed. The saw was pretty much dead-on right out of the box. It does take a while to fully set up and run through the various alignment steps, but other than having to tweak the table runners to make the height consistent with the blade, everything else aligned right-on with a first pass. The thing that impressed me most about this saw was the quality of the construction. I mean everything on this unit is made of metal. It is really solidly built and something you do not see on a lot of woodworking tools today. I have run both the stock blade that came with the saw as well as a Freud 8 inch dado(model SD508) and both work very well with both pine and red oak boards. The Delta blade however emits a rather high pitch whine when the motor eventually reaches full speed. I plan to order a Forrest WW1 blade with a dampener to eliminate that problem. Also, be aware that the blade selection for a 12 inch with a 5/8 inch arbor is rather limited. As I mentioned, Forrest does make one with the WW1 model. All in all this is a great saw. You will not be disappointed.
Update - 04/19/2007 - As a follow-up I e-mailed Delta to ask about the "stop" time on the electric braking mechanism which for me was 18 seconds (from switch off to complete stop of blade rotation). The response from customer support was this time was better than the factory specification which ranges from 25-45 seconds. My last table saw was the one I used with my Dad; it was a solid cast-iron saw made circa 1970. Although it didn't have bells and whistles, it was very very solid and served us well. When considering purchase of a new saw, I did not want to spend $1000 on a decent cabinet saw, but I couldn't bring myself to buy some plastic bargain saw for $250. After searching and searching, I came across this saw, and read the reviews. The stand and rip capacity are really what sold me on it.

I picked mine up today at Home Depot for $499, and it is a dream. The stand is absolutely fantastic, and it collapses, sets up, and moves about my uneven shop floor with ultimate ease. Initital setup of the saw from the time I opened the box (without calibrating...I was too excited) was about 10 minutes; most of those 10 minutes were spent reading a few pages in the manual.

I've played around with the saw for about 3 hours now. I cut through pine, spruce, pressure treated pine, cherry, sugar maple, and white oak. Although I had to go a bit slower on the hardwoods, it didn't have much trouble cutting the full 3 1/8" depth. I also started ripping through a bunch of logs that I have from a sugar maple that I had to take down this past summer; the lumber I got from them is gorgeous. The The height adjustment is very smooth, and the miter adjustment is awesome.

If I had anything bad to say, it's that the saw didn't come with a bag for the dust port. No worries though, I just stole the one from my miter saw until I get a chance to hook up a shop vac.
